YWCA 2023 Stand Against Racism Conference
Tuesday, May 23, 2023–The YWCA of Northwest Ohio’s 2023 Stand Against Racism conference will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, May 25 in the Toledo-Lucas County Main Library’s McMaster Center. The public is invited to this free event, but registration is requested.
This year’s conference is titled, “Advancing Justice: Ensuring Equity for All,” with breakfast provided.
“We are excited to bring the Stand Against Racism Conference back to our community,” said Lisa McDuffie, President and CEO of YWCA of Northwest Ohio. “This event is an important opportunity for us to come together as a community to learn, grow, and take action towards creating a more equitable and just society.”
Loretta Ross, an award-winning, nationally recognized expert on racism and racial justice, will be the keynote speaker. Her work emphasizes how social justice can fuel transformation. Ross appears regularly in national media and was recently featured in a New York Times article, “What if Instead of Calling People Out, We Called Them In?”
Ross teaches a course on White Supremacy, Human Rights, and Calling in the Calling Out Culture as a visiting associate professor at Smith College. Since she began her academic career in 2017, she has taught at Hampshire College, Arizona State University, and Smith College as a visiting professor of clinical practice. She has taught courses on White Supremacy in the Age of Trump, Race and Culture in American, and Reproductive Justice.
Her activism began at 16 when she was tear-gassed at a demonstration as a first-year student at Howard University in 1970.
