Rally for Voting Rights Saturday, May 8

MAY 5, 2021 — It may be Mother’s Day Sunday, but let’s get together Saturday as well at the vacant Elder Beerman parking lot off Secor Road for a socially distanced rally to encourage Congress to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, HR1/S1.

The rally will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 8th, at 3301 Secor Rd., Toledo. People can stay in their cars or get out and remain socially distanced from others, but show up and add your voice to the millions of citizens  around the country who are demanding their right to vote be written into the nation’s laws.

Since President Joe Biden’s victory on Nov. 4, 2020, over former President Donald Trump, Republican-controlled state legislatures across the country have been passing bills to restrict the voting rights of their own citizens — mainly targeting poor and minority residents — through a series of Jim Crow-like restrictions under the guise of “voting security.”

The only security the GOP wants is to make sure that black and brown people, poor people, and Democrats, don’t vote in sufficient numbers to overturn Republican policies and candidates. Everyone in the United States, no matter their political affiliation, race, ethnicity, or income level, should have the right to vote without artificial barriers being erected to stop them.

Add your voice to this cause Saturday. Sometimes it may seem impossible to implement change in this vast country, especially when the rich and powerful are arrayed against that change, but one voice at a time, joining other voices, have time and again changed not only this country, but the world. Add your voice to this effort.
