TCC calls for Toledo Police reform
JULY 16, 2020 — The Toledo Community Coalition, in the wake of ongoing protests of the death of George Floyd and others at the hands of police, has initiated a dialogue with top political and police officials in Toledo.
The Coalition, in a letter to Toledo Mayor Wade K. Kapszukiewicz, President of Toledo City Council Matt Cherry, Chief of Police George Kral, and the heads of the city’s two police labor unions, asks for significant changes to police union contracts to improve transparency and accountability with the citizens of Toledo.
The letter, signed by TCC Co-Chairs The Reverend Otis Gordon and Bishop Robert Culp, stated the “Toledo Community Coalition and the urban and faith communities it represents is deeply concerned about the relationship between the Toledo Police Department and the citizenry of the City of Toledo.”
The letter laid out four points of change TCC would like to see in new labor agreements being negotiated with unions representing patrolmen and command officers.
The changes proposed by TCC focused on more transparency concerning misconduct allegations against police and how police misconduct allegations are investigated. TCC also proposed that records of confirmed police misconduct be kept in police files indefinitely instead of being destroyed by police after a few years, as is the current policy of Toledo police.
